| The 424 stories appeared as newspaper columns, a remarkable series of daily literary journalism for the Chicago Daily News in 1921 and 1922. Interfiled in the alpha list are later stories Hecht wrote under the 1001 Afternoons in Chicago banner for his own publication, The Chicago Literary Times, of which he was Editor, some of the time with Max Bodenheim. Each story has a Kovan number, which is the serial number of the story after it was alphabetized -- like the Kochels for Mozart. This alphabetical list enables researchers or readers of Ben Hecht as well as collectors of Hechteana to check their readings or collections against a definitive list. The dates of the stories will be issued in a hard copy publication, which will include Kovan's annotations. The artist book will feature an accordion binding evocative of ascending skyscrapers and the horizontal expanse of the cityscape. Names of stories are vertically arrayed like architectural edifices, thus the name, Bibliocityscape. For some thirty 1001 Afternoons stories not published in the original 1922 edition, you may purchase four books issued by the Snickersnee Press and a set of newsletters edited and produced by Kovan. A few others have been published on this site. But there are 425 in all, so only a fraction have been published. The Snickersnee Press has them all and is trying to decide how best to issue them. Stay tuned. . . |
